& 2 surgeries... i had forgotten i'd created this blog! hopefully i'll at least try and post something once a week at least!
today, my mom turns 75! she is the bravest person i know. i am proud of what she has made of her life. what she has had to go though and how she has overcome it... and come out all the more stronger! she is a living example of "what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger"!!
she suffered 3rd degree burns at the tender age of 12. i have heard various accounts of this incident from all of her siblings. how she used to cry when she had to do her hand exercises to straighten her hands (the burnt skin had shrivelled and set so the sisters would take turns to massage it with oil)... she had to carry buckets of water. and her sisters would walk with her in tears and with words of encouragement... my mom loves brinjal and they told me the whole family had stopped eating brinjal because it would aggravate allergies and cause her burnt skin to itch! that is family for you!
she was the first girl to graduate in her family with a brother (who was a graduate) and three sisters before her. she was a mother to her nieces who were far away from their own parents! my youngest aunt still calls her the best teacher and i second that!! my love for literature came from her!
she let me do a lot of things that my peers were not allowed to do. if i am a forward-thinking, independent, strong woman today, it is all because of her!!
the phone has been ringing all morning... her siblings have all been calling to wish her. happy birthday, mummy dearest!!
